Occupy London Eclipses 12,000 Facebook-Follower Mark

Occupy London supporters speak at the 'Block the Bridge' demonstration last weekend.

The Occupy London movement tallied its 12,000th facebook follower today, with the number saying they will march on the London Stock Exchange this weekend approaching 5,000.

Occupy Wall Street-style movements are spreading in the United Kingdom, said Naomi Colvin, an activist and spokeswoman for the group. A camp of protesters appeared in England’s second-city, Manchester, earlier this month.

Colvin is one of about 30 people organizing the London event on a daily basis. She and two others handle media attention, which swelled after a press release appeared on Occupy London’s website yesterday.

“We’re pretty overwhelmed by the response,” she said. “People obviously want this to happen. We want to use this amazing media response to support other occupy movements going on in the UK.”

A spokeswoman for the London police said authorities would take appropriate steps in preparation for the protest, but that operational details are not discussed in advance of an event. "We are looking at the situation and adjusting," she said.

The Occupy London demonstration is scheduled for noon this Saturday, with organizers expecting people from around United Kingdom to attend. 12,580 people currently like the group's facebook page and more than 4,800 have signed up to attend.
