Haringey Council Press Release: Tottenham Business Rate Relief

Haringey Council  PR 4226    25/10/2011    [For Immediate Release]

Riot-hit firms offered a business rate reduction

In a huge boost to riot-hit firms Haringey Council is offering hundreds of traders a reduction on their business rates to help them cope with lost trade and damage.

The move, which could see over 400 businesses across the borough benefit from a reduction worth up to a total of £1.6m, is part of a concerted effort by the council to support the local economy in the aftermath of the summer disturbances.

The council has already given grants worth nearly £150,000 to companies in Haringey affected by the riots.

Small firms with business rate liability and suffering direct damage or loss of earnings can get nearly eight months off their annual business rates covering the period from the riots until March 31, 2012 once their hardship claim has been accepted.

Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Cllr Alan Strickland, said: “Through our dedicated business support scheme we’ve already made a large number of payments to businesses affected by the riots from various funds and I’m sure this discount will be a further welcome boost.

“Moving forward our focus will very much be on regenerating and rebuilding Tottenham so it better than ever before and we will be working closely with local businesses to make sure we get this right.”

Businesses which have already made a claim should receive a revised bill soon.  Any traders who suffered from the riots but have yet to make a claim should call the business rates team on 020 8489 3551 at the earliest opportunity.

More information and advice for firms affected by the riots can be found at www.haringey.gov.uk/disturbances
