Another Unofficial Post Office Opening in Tottenham
Tottenham MP David Lammy cut an unofficial ribbon for the neighborhood's recently reopened post office Friday. The restored business has been a welcome sight for locals, who had to travel out of the immediate area to get mail for months, after rioters burned the original office in August.
Lammy is among a string of officials and dignitaries to visit the site, which reopened its doors on January 11th. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the previous week, while Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, also made a visit.
An interview with the MP was repeatedly interrupted by a man demanding an ATM be installed at the new location. During his more than half hour visit, Lammy was greeted with a mixture of praise, requests and complaints.
"Never a boring day," said post office owner Vipin Rao. "The man's right though, we do need a cash machine."
The new location on Tottenham High Road is expected to be temporary site, while repairs are made to the original.
An official opening ceremony has yet to be scheduled, but Rao says he is working with the Royal Mail and Post office to arrange one.
