After a crackdown in the US, is the Occupy Movement (as we know it) on its last legs? photo by Benjamin Gunn |
City of London officials restarted legal action against Occupy London after a two week break. They say an eviction will likely take several weeks and police will not forcibly remove protesters.
The decision came after two-weeks of negotiations with demonstrators did not yield a solution. Protesters declined an offer to stay through December, provided they left at the beginning of the New Year.
Authroities in the United States took a different approach. Police moved to kick out encamped demonstrators over the last few days in Portland, Oakland, and Wall Street, where the movement began.
You've got to wonder, if UK demonstrators took their cue from folks on Wall Street, will British police resist the temptation to emulate their counterparts across the channel?
At least for now, London's occupiers are opptomistic they will.
The other question: with the weather getting worse and official resistance mounting, will the worldwide occupations last?
